First some caveats. As hard as I have tried to uncover every living thing hiding underground, in the dark or inside other creatures, the one thing I am confident in is that I have not found them all. Technology can only get you so far without more funding and years of specialized training than I am willing or able to afford, and even with unlimited time and money I’m pretty sure getting an exact figure would be a fool’s errand. This was always about getting a rough ballpark idea of how many species use my property as part of their ecosystems, especially when you consider that the species dynamics are always changing based on factors both within (e.g., gardening) and outside of (e.g., climate change) my control. I’ve also undoubtedly misidentified some species that require careful microscopic identification of their genitals for true confirmation, and for that I offer no apologies. Our insect friends deserve some self-respect too after all. With these qualifications, here are the results.
